McLeod Ganj (Upper Dharamshala) is a hill suburb of Dharamshala in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh, at 1,457 m under the Dhauladhar ridgeline. It is the residence of the 14th Dalai Lama, houses the Namgyal Monastery, and is the de-facto global centre of Tibetan Buddhism, exile culture, and Himalayan trekking.

India's Little Lhasa — The Dalai Lama's Mountain Residence & Tibetan Cultural Heart
A Glimpse into History
Origins – British Military Station
McLeod Ganj was established as the upper cantonment of Dharamshala by the British in 1850, named after Sir Donald McLeod, Lieutenant Governor of Punjab. The area served as summer quarters for British officers. The 1905 Kangra earthquake largely destroyed the British structures.
Evolution – Tibetan Exile Capital (1960)
The 14th Dalai Lama arrived in McLeod Ganj in 1960 after escaping Tibet. The Indian government provided residence at Swarg Ashram. Thousands of Tibetan refugees followed, establishing monasteries, schools, and the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. The area became known globally as "Little Lhasa."
Modern Era – Global Spiritual Tourism
McLeod Ganj now draws over 1 million visitors annually — pilgrims attending Dalai Lama teachings, Triund trekkers, yoga and meditation retreat seekers, and researchers at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. The Dalai Lama's public teachings (when held) are announced via his official website and open to all.
Cultural Significance
McLeod Ganj's Tsuglagkhang Complex houses the Dalai Lama's private temple and the Tibet Museum — the only museum documenting the Tibetan genocide and exile narrative. The Namgyal Monastery is the Dalai Lama's personal monastery and the largest Tibetan monastery outside Tibet. The Library of Tibetan Works holds 80,000+ Tibetan-language volumes.
Festivals & Events
Losar — Tibetan New Year (Feb–Mar)
McLeod Ganj celebrates Losar over 3 days with Cham (ritual mask) dances at Namgyal Monastery, butter lamp ceremonies, and communal feasting. The Dalai Lama presides over key ceremonies — full programme broadcast live on his official websitel.
Dalai Lama Public Teachings (variable dates)
When the Dalai Lama holds public teachings at Tsuglagkhang, thousands of Buddhists from across Asia gather in McLeod Ganj. Dates are published 2–3 months ahead on dalailama.com; free registration required but no fee charged.
Did You Know?
The Dalai Lama has lived in McLeod Ganj continuously since 1960 — making it his longest-ever residence (65+ years), longer than he ever lived in Lhasa. The Potala Palace in Lhasa was his official residence for only 9 years (1950–1959) before the exile. His Dharamshala home is called Bryn Cottage — a modest colonial-era residence surrounded by Tibetan prayer flags.
